Do you have any idea how much fuel you waste through doors, windows, and ceilings? What about your electricity supply, do you know how much money use could be saving each month? When we begin to look for ways to cut costs in our lives the best place to start would be your monthly bills. And when you look at them you will see that it is your fuel and electric costs that break your bank every month. So why not instill some simple changes and save rea on your energy bills. UK households spend £1.9bn on lighting every single year. Some have suggested that turning a light on and off requires an energy surge which is actually more expensive than turning the lights off, but with most modern light bulbs this is not true. The volume of electricity that is wasted on lighting is astonishing. If every UK household replaced one light bulb with an energy efficient one the money saved could pay for 75,000 household fuel bills every year. Children in particular have a habit of leaving lights on, so one tip for reducing the cost of your bill is to impress the importance of turning off the lights. Offering a little pocket money for turning off a light could see you save a lot of money (as well as allowing you to get rid of some of your coppers). Another thing you should do is wash your clothes at a cooler temperature. Washing your clothes at 30C as opposed to 40C uses 40% less energy whilst being generally as good at cleaning. There are even powders around that will wash at as low as 20C or 10C and the cooler your wash, the cheaper your bills. With washing machines and other large appliances, make sure you buy an Energy Saving Recommended model when it comes to buying new appliances, and if your house is well insulated and warm, save money by getting rid of your tumble drier. The ultimate advice is to make sure that your thermostat is turned down. 1 degree cooler can save you more than 10% of your heating bill, similarly you don’t need to have your hot water thermostat set too high, if it’s above 60C you should turn it down and you’ll be surprised at how much you could save. Finally, if your boiler is over 15 years old you should think about replacing it. The amount of money that it costs to get a new boiler installed can be saved in little more than a year. If you do get a boiler installed make sure you use a reputable company like British Gas.
